Revisited Using Continued Fractions

چکیده
If the equation of the title has an integer solution with k ≥ 2, then m > 109.3·10 6 . This was the current best result and proved using a method due to L. Moser (1953). This approach cannot be improved to reach the benchmark m > 1010 7 . Here we achieve m > 1010 9 by showing that 2k/(2m−3) is a convergent of log 2 and making an extensive continued fraction digits calculation of (log 2)/N , with N an appropriate integer. This method is very different from that of Moser. Indeed, our result seems to give one of very few instances where a large scale computation of a numerical constant has an application.

Construction of Families of Long Continued Fractions Revisited
In this survey article, we revisit construction of simple continued fractions of quadratic irrationals with long period lengths, which has generated much interest in the relatively recent literature. We show that new and not-sonew results actually follow from results of Perron in the 1950s and from results of this author from over a decade ago. Moreover, we are able to generalize and simplify n...
متن کاملThe Formal Theory of Birth - and - Death Processes , Lattice Path Combinatorics , and Continued Fractions
Classic works of Karlin-McGregor and Jones-Magnus have established a general correspondence between continuous-time birth-and-death processes and continued fractions of the Stieltjes-Jacobi type together with their associated orthogonal polynomials. This fundamental correspondence is revisited here in the light of the basic relation between weighted lattice paths and continued fractions otherwi...

متن کاملUnivariate Polynomial Real Root Isolation: Continued Fractions Revisited
We present algorithmic, complexity and implementation results concerning real root isolation of integer univariate polynomials using the continued fraction expansion of real algebraic numbers. One motivation is to explain the method’s good performance in practice. We improve the previously known bound by a factor of dτ , where d is the polynomial degree and τ bounds the coefficient bitsize, thu...
متن کاملThe Euclidean algorithm and finite continued fractions
Fowler [22] Measure theory of continued fractions: Einsiedler and Ward [19, Chapter 3] and Iosifescu and Kraaikamp [35, Chapter 1]. In harmonic analysis and dynamical systems, we usually care about infinite continued fractions because we usually care about the Lebesgue measure of a set defined by some conditions on the convergents or partial quotients of a continued fraction. For some questions...
